Participants: Health care workers looking for information about partial or complete formula feeding.
Goals and Objectives: To provide factual and scientific information about infant formula in order to provide knowledgeable support for families to make informed infant feeding decisions without any commercial/financial interest or product promotion.
Course Content:
A Brief History of Infant Feeding
· An interesting look at infant foods and feeding equipment
· Social influences and infant feeding decisions
Infant Formula: the product and the process
· Composition and manufacturing process
Global and National strategies to protect infant health
· The updated BFHI (2017): the approach towards non-breastfeeding families
· How the WHO Code influences the quality and safety of artificial baby foods for the protection of infants and young children
· Codex Alimentarius
· Health Canada recommendations
Caring for the Formula Fed Infant
· What should be considered when making a decision
· Cue based responsive feeding and optimal outcomes
· Recognizing issues: sensitivities and discomforts
· Finding resources and support
